Montreal's Biodome (Biodôme de Montréal)

The Montreal Biodome (Biodôme de Montréal) is a unique indoor zoo that replicates 4 distinct ecosystems found in the Americas. Each of the four environments occupies a section of the Biodome and features a variety of animals, flowers and plants that belong to each of these environments. Located in the Olympic Park, the Biodome is a combination of a zoo, an aquarium, a botanical garden and so much more. It also features various interactive activities for children of all ages.

The Ecosystems of the Americas

The Montreal Biodome recreates some of the most beautiful ecosystems in the Americas. These ecosystems include:

  • The Tropical Forest is a replica of the South-American rainforest. It features a lush and humid forest that is warm year-round
  • The Laurentian Forest is a replica of the North-American wilderness. This forest changes with the season
  • The St. Lawrence Marine Ecosystem is a modeled after the Gulf of Saint Lawrence
  • The Polar Area consists of a replica of the Arctic and Antarctic

Animals and Plants at the Biodome

The Biodome has an abundance of animals. Visitors can spot monkeys, penguins, seagulls, alligators and hummingbirds. Children love the Biodome because there is so much to see and do in this interactive museum. The Biodome is home to over 4800 animals and 750 plants.

A Popular Montreal Attraction

The Biodome building was originally used as the Velodrome (cycling stadium) for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. It is one of Montreal’s most popular tourist attractions, along with the Montreal Botanical Garden and the Montreal Insectarium. The Biodome should not be confused with the Bioshpere, which is the geodesic dome that once housed the American pavilion for Expo 67. For more information about the Bioshpere, click here.
