Montreal’s Pointe-à-Callière Museum is both a museum and historical site at the same time. Located in Old Montreal, the museum was founded in 1992 to celebrate Montreal’s 350th birthday. Pointe-à-Callière is packed with information on the archaeological and historical riches of Montreal. Located on top of the birthplace of Montreal, the museum’s mission is to showcase and safeguard Montreal’s archaeological and historical heritage. It also happens to contain over a thousand years of historical finds around the area.
Pointe-à-Callière Exhibitions
The museum features various permanent exhibitions as well as major temporary exhibitions. Two of the most popular permanent exhibitions are Where Montreal Was Born and Montreal – Tales of a City. There are also various collections, artifacts and documents that have been donated by Montreal locals.
The buildings of Pointe-à-Callière
The Pointe-à-Callière Museum is composed of various buildings. These buildings include three archaeological sites, the birthplace of Montreal, Montreal’s first Catholic cemetery and a vast archaeological collection that features more than a million objects and artifacts. Archaeological remains from every period of Montreal are showcased at Pointe-à-Callière.
A National Historic Site
Since 1992, the museum has welcomed over 4.5 million visitors and has become one of Montreal’s most popular attractions. Nearly 350,000 people visit the museum every year. The museum is recognized as a national historic site.
